Color Poem

Rainbow of Rhymes: Can be dramatized by whole group of caregivers/children for review

Red is a happy color, Hurray for red. Red for a top, red for a kite, Red for an apple that I can bite, and red for a shiny sled. Red for a wooly sweater, for a cap to pop on my head, Red for a robin's rosy breast, Red for the sun when it sinks to rest. Oh, when it come to color-give me RED!

Orange: My favorite color is like a flame, though a fruit is where it gets its name, Orange of course! A great plump pumpkin, A harvest moon, a tangerine, Tiger lillies by a stream, A campfire's flicker, a lantern's gleam-None of these to me, would seem half so jolly if they weren't Orange, of course!

Yellow: Yellow things are sunny. Yellow has a glow, it's cheerier and brighter than anything else I know. Yellow peaches and yellow pears, Yellow curtains and yellow chairs, Corn on the cob, daffodils, a canary singing golden trills, And a big furry yellow cat, purring by a fireside mat. I'm a little like the fellow who likes anything-As long as it's yellow!

Green: The color I'd choose? You can only mean-green! Green for the fresh new robes of spring, of grass, and every growing thing, Smooth glass marbles, lively frogs, Forest lakes, and cattail bogs, there's something serene and cool and clean about green!

Blue: Blue is the dearest color to me-color of the sky, color of the sea. Color of flower's petaled dress, of the bluebird, a sign of happiness, of shadows on snow, of a baby's eyes-blue is the color to love and to prize!

Violet: Royalty for the lovely clothing, yes, gorgeous enough for a princess-guess! Violet, purple! Wear it proud, with royalty, as the sweets woods flowers that gave it its name-Violets!

All Colors: Bands of color arching high make a rainbow in the sky. They add their shimmer to shell and stone, to fish and flower, to seed and cone. These jewel tones flash everywhere and make the earth about us fair. Though you and I have a favorite hue, each is a part of the beauty we view, in petal and pebble, in leaf and feather-lovely alone but most lovely together. (Repeat this line!)
